Chapel Minyan's Learning Resources

Leading Davening on Shabbat Morning

We have assembled some recorded resources for people who would like to learn to lead Shabbat morning services. In addition, personal assistance can be arranged.

In addition to the melodies and tunes you may find on these resources, we welcome the opportunity to hear new melodies and nigguim.

Typically one person leads the service from the start through the end of Pesukei d'zimra, another person takes over at shochen ad and leads through the taking out of the Torah, and a third person takes over for returning the Torah and continues until the end of musaf. If you would like to try to start by learning a smaller part of the services, that is possible also. Contact Ralph Isberg for details.

A dress rehearsal is usually a good idea before leading the davening for the first time. This allows you to become even more familiar with the choreography of the service.

On-line
Alan Teperow has kindly recorded the Shacharit and Musaf services for Shabbat. Both recordings are wonderful and contain some instruction and some variant tunes as well as the full services. You can hear them by clicking below, or by borrowing the tapes from the Lifson Library (see below).

Emanuel’s Lifson Library

Our library has a wide range of davening tapes, from the very ornate to the hameshe. The three davening resources placed in the library by the Shabbat Chapel Minyan are:

Musaf by our own Alan Teperow

This tape includes many of Alan's favorite renditions. (One tape.)

Tapes from the JTS Rabbinical School

Three 90 minute tapes from JTS that go through all the leader's parts and give several alternate traditional and newer tunes for various parts of the Shabbat morning services:

  • Tape 1 - Weekday Shacharit, additions to Amida, weekday Ma'ariv, Kiddush, Havdala, beginning of Kabbalat Shabbat
  • Tape 2 - Shabbat Ma'ariv (continued), Shacharit, Torah service
  • Tape 3 - Shabbat Musaf and Mincha, Hallel, Shalosh Regalim

Nusach from Kehilat Hadar of New York City

A minyan in New York City has produced a tape with Shabbat morning nusach. This tape is also used by the minyan that meets at the Hartman House in Jerusalem.

Most or all of the nusach on this tape is also available on the web at: http://www.kehilathadar.org.
