I-95 (Route 128) from the North

Take the Route 9 exit from I-95 and then follow the directions "Route 9 from the West" below.

I-95 (Route 128) from the South

Take exit 19A from I-95 and bear right onto Highland Ave. After 0.3 miles, the road becomes Needham Street. Continue for 0.8 miles; then take a left turn onto Winchester Street, which becomes Centre Street after 0.2 miles. Continue through the shopping area of Newton Centre (just after Beacon Street). After a short distance you will come to a traffic light at Commonwealth Avenue, with a very small shopping area on the right. Continue past Commonwealth to the next traffic light. This is Ward Street. Take a right onto Ward Street. After you pass three streets on the left, you will see Temple Emanuel on the left.

Commonwealth Avenue from the West

Travel east (toward Boston) on Commonwealth Avenue. You will pass the Newton City Hall on the right and come to the light at Walnut Street. Continue on Commonwealth Avenue up the hill to the next traffic light, which is at Centre Street, and take a left. [There are some shops on the right in the block on Commonwealth after the Centre Street light, so if you pass those shops, you've gone too far. In that case, take a left onto Irving Street, as in the directions below.]

After taking the left onto Centre Street, proceed to the first traffic light. This is Ward Street. Take a right. After you pass three streets on the left, you will see Temple Emanuel on the left.

Commonwealth Avenue from the East

Travel west (away from Boston) on Commonwealth Avenue. After you descend the famous Heartbreak Hill, you will come to a traffic light at Grant Avenue. This is the third light from the Boston College MBTA terminus, counting the light at the terminus as number one.

Continue on to the third street on the right, just beyond a small shopping area on the right. This is Irving Street. Turn right on it. Temple Emanuel will be in front of you at the end of this street. You can park on this street and walk to the Temple. (Should you miss Irving Street and reach Centre Street at the next traffic light, turn right onto Centre Street and then right at the next light, Ward Street. See the directions in the previous paragraph.)

Massachusetts Turnpike from the West

Travel east on the Turnpike, toward Boston, past the I-95 (Route 128) exit to the Watertown/Newton Corner exit (exit 17). Continue up the exit ramp and take the first right onto Centre Street. There is a traffic light at this intersection, and Hubbard Drug is the store on the corner.

Counting that traffic light as number one, proceed to the 4th light. This is Ward Street. Take a left onto Ward. After you pass three streets on the left, you will see Temple Emanuel on the left.

Massachusetts Turnpike from the East

As in the instructions above, take the Watertown/Newton Corner exit (exit 17). Proceed up the ramp and continue straight, parallel to the turnpike. After passing the buildings on the left, follow the road as it curves to the left over the Turnpike. Get into the right lane, and follow the road until it is again heading parallel to the Turnpike back toward Boston. Take the right onto Centre Street, and follow the directions in the section immediately above.

Route 9 from the West

Continue on Route 9 past I-95 (Route 128). You will come to a light at the top of a hill. Just past the light is a Getty gas station and then a Dunkin' Donuts on the right. Take the next exit. The access road will loop back parallel to Route 9 in the opposite direction and come to Centre Street.

Take a right onto Centre Street. Continue through the shopping area of Newton Centre (just after Beacon Street). After a short distance you will come to a traffic light at Commonwealth Avenue, with a very small shopping area on the right. Continue past Commonwealth to the next traffic light. This is Ward Street.

Take a right onto Ward Street. After you pass three streets on the left, you will see Temple Emanuel on the left.

Route 9 from the East

Follow Route 9 to the west past the major shopping malls and some smaller shopping areas. After descending a hill, take the exit at Parker Street, which crosses on an overpass above Route 9. [If you miss Parker Street, you can proceed to the Centre Street exit.]

Proceed up the exit road to Parker Street and take a right onto Parker. Parker will merge with Cypress Street, which joins it from the right, and then merge with Centre Street, which joins it from the left just before the Newton Centre Shopping area.

Proceed through the shopping area as described in the section above.
