An Evening with Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie

December 7, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie, author of Joy: A Proposal, will share his thinking as to why, and under what circumstances, he performs interfaith weddings.

Rabbi Lau-Lavie exudes charisma, creativity, and courage. He is an iconoclast. In his first years as a Conservative rabbi, ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, he crossed the line.

Whatever you think of his proposal and his decision, whether you lament it or celebrate it, Rabbi Lau-Lavie is a crucially important thinker and leader in 21st century American Judaism.

We debate endlessly. He does.

We will try to get a compromise position through the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards that will allow us to be present at and to offer blessings at an interfaith wedding but will stop short of officiation. In the 3 to 5 years it takes us to try to navigate a compromise, he will have officiated at any number of interfaith weddings.

What would be better for the Jewish future? What would be better for Temple Emanuel’s future? What would be better for the future of our children, their parents, and their future children? Our endless debate and careful negotiation, which will of necessity result in a compromise, a half loaf? Or his doing it?

However you answer that question, we are lucky to get him. He is not to be missed.
