HIGHLIGHTED EVENTSThe essence of our Seven Gates is to create a stronger sense of community. One of those points of entry is the Gate of Prayer. The oldest form of community engaged in prayer is the daily Minyan. For the last 70 years, Temple Emanuel has been known as the “go-to” place if you need a Minyan. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please volunteer to attend one evening per week- your presence may make the difference. For more info, contact dnesson@templeemanuel.com.

Friday, November 2, 2007 Please come celebrate the Installation of Hazzan Elias Rosemberg A Kabblat Shabbat service will begin promptly at 7:30 PM and be followed by a festive Oneg. We invite the whole congregation to participate in the joyous event and look forward to seeing you there. Friday, November 9, 2007. We are working on an exciting idea for the fall, and we need your help. The idea is a new traditional Kabbalat Shabbat service, with instruments, modeled after the highly successful service at Bnei Jeshurun in New York. I know this service. I love this service. I grew up with this service. It started in Argentina, where I am from. This service is why I became a cantor. It mixes the traditional tefilot with beautiful, spiritual nigunim (melodies) in a way that allows people to feel, to think, to daven, to experience. That is why so many people go to it in New York. That is why I believe it will work here. The service consists of musicians who play the following instruments: percussion, an acoustic guitar, a flute, a keyboard, and a cello. The service also consists of four ba’alei tefilah (vocalists) who lead the davening. I will be one of those, of course, together with Rabbi Robinson, who has a beautiful voice. We are looking for two things.
We are putting the group of musicians and vocalists together now. We will begin to rehearse in the fall after the High Holidays. Together, we will create a spiritual traditional musical service that will move us, and therefore also move God. B’shalom, PG45 Goes to the Movies
Join PG45 on Sunday, November 11, at 3:00 p.m. for the Massachusetts Premier of the Boston Jewish Film Festival’s Souvenirs at the Institute of Contemporary Art. An out-of-work filmmaker Shahar Cohen and his father Sleiman—an 82-year-old Yemeni-Israeli—take to the road, following Sleiman’s WWII path through Europe with the Jewish Brigade. Shahar hopes they discover a “souvenir”—that is, his father’s offspring by a wartime Dutch girlfriend. Funny, unpredictable and unforgettable, Souvenirs won the Audience Award at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Following the movie, the group will meet for discussion over a kosher Chinese dinner at the home of Elyse and Sandy Friedman, 370 Dedham Street, Newton Center. The fee, $25.00 per person, covers the movie and dinner. To make your reservation, we must have your check no later than November 5. Your check, made out to Temple Emanuel PG45, should be sent to Elyse Friedman, 370 Dedham Street, Newton, MA 02459. For further information, please contact Elyse (elyse.friedman@comcast.net; 617-969-1081).
ONGOING EVENTS...Talmud Study with Rabbi Wes Gardenswartz This year we will study the 5th chapter of Berachot, which deals the issue of intensity in prayer (kavannah), always to be desired but hard to attain. Sisterhood Rabbi’s Class Sisterhood is once again offering ‘The Rabbi’s Class’. This year’s study will be “The Book of Judges: Stories of Rough-Hewn Leaders in a Turbulent Time.” The Jews are surrounded by hostile enemies who seek to do them harm. They suffer from the loss of life and hope and the burdens of war and economic strain. When will it ever end? Will peace ever be possible? This is not only a modern dilemma, it is also an ancient dilemma. In our Sisterhood class, we will plumb the ancient texts for insights desperately needed in our world today. Questions?
