Exploring the Sephardic Diaspora through Food
March 11 @ 7:45 pm - 9:00 pm
with Sara Gardner
In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs expelled the Sephardic Jewish community from Spain, triggering one of the farthest-reaching sub-dispersions of the diaspora up until that moment. The Sephardic community constituted a critical element of the sociocultural and religious milieu in medieval Spain, leaving its mark on many aspects of Spanish society and culture — not the least of which, its food.
Join Sara Gardner for a lecture and demo on the lingering impact of the Sephardic legacy on Spanish food as well as the diasporic culinary repertoire of the Sephardic Jews. Through historical sources and the food itself, Sara will demonstrate the ways that food has acted and continues serve as a critical medium telling the story of Sephardic Jewish life from the medieval period until today.
