Dr. Susanne Klingenstein was born in Germany and studied at the University of Heidelberg, Harvard and Brandeis University. She wrote her dissertation on the integration of Jewish professors into American English departments. She has published four books, dozens of scholarly articles on Jewish literature, and some 250 journalistic pieces. She is currently writing a history of Yiddish literature.
At Temple Emanuel, Dr. Klingenstein has taught, a three-year course on Yiddish literature, a two-year course on Russian literature, a course on the Jews in Russia and in 2017-18 introduced the One Story-One Hour course.
During 2018-2019 the focus will be on Jewish Fiction. The discussion-based course has three-goals: Discovering a broad variety of authors, honing analytical skills, and connecting to friends of literary art.
In 2018-2019 the stories will be chosen from two anthologies: Irving Howe and Eliezer Greenberg, eds., A Treasury of Yiddish Stories (1954), and Joachim Neugröschel, ed., No Star Too Beautiful (2002).
