Yom HaShoah Commemoration with Paula Apsell

April 27, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

On Yom HaShoah, Paula Apsell will tell us about her upcoming new feature documentary on Jewish resistance during the Shoah.

Six million Jews died in the Holocaust. But before they died — They Fought Back.

Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust – An Unknown Story

We’ve all heard of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, but how many people know how widespread and prevalent Jewish resistance to Nazi barbarism was? Instead, many people, Jews included, believe that Jews went to their deaths passively, “like sheep to the slaughter.” On Yom HaShoah, 2022, our member, Paula Apsell, will discuss her extensive research across Eastern Europe and upcoming new feature documentary and educational materials celebrating the true history of our peoples’ brave battles against German inhumanity during the Holocaust.

Contrary to what many believe, Jews waged at least 60 armed rebellions in ghettos and 25 in death and slave labor camps. Thousands of Jews fought with partisan units across Europe. And no less important, in every ghetto and camp there were countless examples of non-violent resistance against the Nazis. Paula and her team have filmed in several locations in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Israel where historians and scientists are finding evidence to show that Jews fought back time and again, with weapons and without, against a cruel and overpowering enemy.

Some 80 years after these horrific events, as survivors leave us and personal testimony fades, the Holocaust narrative reaching the public remains incomplete, especially where resistance is concerned. As Paula says, “Before any more time elapses, we owe it to history, to the memory of those who confronted this unimaginable evil, and to ourselves to set the record straight.”
