SUMMARY:Yom Ha'atzmaut Shabbat Morning Service
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel Independence Day\nJoin us for this special Shabbat Morning service\, as we hear from Z and Y\, a bride and groom whose wedding and newlywed year were interrupted by war. They are coming to tell their story on the Shabbat before Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. Like every IDF soldier and their family\, they showed up to the Jewish story to make sure there is a Jewish future. Let’s show up for them to bear witness to\, and to thank them for\, their story and their sacrifice. \nWe will honor this occasion with special music & prayers and invite all Israelis to join us on the bimah with Cantor Rosemberg for the Prayer for Israel. \nA festive Kiddush with an Israeli twist to follow. \nAbout Z and Y\nHer family founded a moshav in northern Israel\, where his family settled and worked the land. Over 100 years later\, they met in Tel Aviv. She was a lawyer at a top Israeli law firm\, and he was a senior commander in the Israeli Air Force. Shortly after they began dating\, October 7 happened. \nThey got married the same night Israel first struck Iran’s nuclear facilities. He was present for both – standing under the chuppah with her\, and later leading his fellow pilots in his F-16. \nAfter moving to the U.S. for her MBA at MIT\, he began working at a startup. They spent time enjoying shared hobbies like reading\, hiking\, pottery\, snowboarding\, and chess before he was called up for reserve duty during the second war with Iran. While they were apart for two months\, she became a part of this community. He has just returned\, and together they are here to share their story and thank you for your support. \nSponsored by Israel Connections Committee

SUMMARY:Post-Kiddush Talk with Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger\, Director of International Relations for Roots
DESCRIPTION:Hasidic Texts on Passionate Pluralism (And Their Application to Jewish–Palestinian Relations)\nIn this session\, we will explore Hasidic teachings about pluralism and what might be called “the humility of the journey” – a spiritual stance that allows us to “hold the stick from both ends”: to be passionately committed to our own truths while truly listening to\, respecting\, and even learning from opposing truths. These sources offer a rich Jewish theological framework for the work of Roots/Shorashim/Judur\, the Israeli–Palestinian grassroots initiative for understanding\, nonviolence\, and transformation\, which seeks to make space in our hearts for both Jewish and Palestinian narratives and experiences. \nAbout Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger\nRabbi Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox Israeli rabbi and teacher who has been profoundly transformed by his encounters with Palestinians and the Palestinian People since late 2013. As he never tires of saying\, he is now healing from the hubris of exclusivity with which he was afflicted all of his adult life. Today he knows that there are two Peoples in the Holy Land\, and that each has their own story. Indeed the Land itself bears two identities – the Land of Israel is also the Land of Palestine. \nOriginally hailing from New York\, Rav Hanan immigrated to Israel on his own at the age of 20 and has lived in Alon Shvut\, Gush Etzion\, for over 40 years. His family background is Reform\, but already at the end of high school he began delving into observant Judaism. Following his B.A.\, he spent over 10 years in advanced Jewish study\, primarily at the Har Etzion College of Jewish Studies and in the M.A. program of the Dept. of Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University. \nLearn More→
