SUMMARY:Yom Ha'atzmaut Shabbat Morning Service
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel Independence Day\nJoin us for this special Shabbat Morning service\, as we hear from Z and Y\, a bride and groom whose wedding and newlywed year were interrupted by war. They are coming to tell their story on the Shabbat before Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. Like every IDF soldier and their family\, they showed up to the Jewish story to make sure there is a Jewish future. Let’s show up for them to bear witness to\, and to thank them for\, their story and their sacrifice. \nWe will honor this occasion with special music & prayers and invite all Israelis to join us on the bimah with Cantor Rosemberg for the Prayer for Israel. \nA festive Kiddush with an Israeli twist to follow. \nAbout Z and Y\nHer family founded a moshav in northern Israel\, where his family settled and worked the land. Over 100 years later\, they met in Tel Aviv. She was a lawyer at a top Israeli law firm\, and he was a senior commander in the Israeli Air Force. Shortly after they began dating\, October 7 happened. \nThey got married the same night Israel first struck Iran’s nuclear facilities. He was present for both – standing under the chuppah with her\, and later leading his fellow pilots in his F-16. \nAfter moving to the U.S. for her MBA at MIT\, he began working at a startup. They spent time enjoying shared hobbies like reading\, hiking\, pottery\, snowboarding\, and chess before he was called up for reserve duty during the second war with Iran. While they were apart for two months\, she became a part of this community. He has just returned\, and together they are here to share their story and thank you for your support. \nSponsored by Israel Connections Committee

SUMMARY:Elana Stein Hain: When Diaspora and Israel Challenge One Another – Reading Megillat Esther in Light of Today
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the holiday of Purim\, join us in person at Temple Emanuel as we welcome back one of our favorite Hartman scholars\, Dr. Elana Stein Hain\, and explore what we can learn from reading Megillat Esther in light of today. \nThe Purim story centers on the Jews of Persia and its empire\, yet many Jews had returned to Judea and were already building the second Temple there. This allows us to explore an additional layer to the story as a lens for considering tensions between Israel and the Diaspora today: how Jews living in these different places viewed each other – and what tensions might be just beneath the surface. \nDon’t miss Elana’s teaching\, When Diaspora and Israel Challenge One Another: Reading Megillat Esther in Light of Today. \nWatch a Recording Here \nFind Sources Here \nUpcoming Hartman Learning Programs:\nJune 24 – June 30\, 2026 – TE-Hartman 2026 Trip to Israel. Let us know here you’d like to learn more! \nLook for recordings of all our online sessions and selected lectures of Hartman scholars at Temple Emanuel here. \nWatch for updated details on this program and all Hartman learning opportunities in our weekly Friday midday Hartman @ Home email.

DESCRIPTION:The sharp Yiddish novelist\, Chaim Grade\, described the falling apart of the orthodox world in Eastern Europe in the 1930s. SUMMARY:Close Reading: Sons and Daughters by Chaim Grade - A Jewish Novel Taught by Dr. Susanne Klingenstein
DESCRIPTION:The sharp Yiddish novelist\, Chaim Grade\, described the falling apart of the orthodox world in Eastern Europe in the 1930s. Sons and daughters of rabbis get out of the shtetl\, but the fathers claw them back through guilt. Grade’s characters are incredibly alive; they are goofy\, mad\, heroic and wise. The novel is long\, learned and confusing\, so we will read it together at the clip of 50 pages each week\, accompanied by one of discussion each week to help understand the religious world of the Lithuanian rabbis. \nClass dates: Nov 6\, 13\, 20\, Dec 4\, 11\, 17\, 30\, Jan 8\, 15\, 26\, 29\, Feb 5\nAll classes will meet on Zoom. \nCost: (Scholarships available)\n \n$180 for Temple Emanuel Members\n$250 for Non-Members \nThis class is now at capacity. \nAbout Dr. Susanne Klingenstein\nDr. Susanne Klingenstein is an Associate at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University. She served as professor of Writing and Humanistic Studies at MIT\, as Lecturer in the Humanities at Harvard Medical School\, and as Director of the Communication Curriculum in the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. SUMMARY:Out of the Darkness: Combat-Related Trauma & The Niv Nirel Center
DESCRIPTION:Come hear the remarkable team of Tami Raviv and Dr. Kfir Feffer speak about the pursuit of their common vision – the creation and operation of the Niv Nirel Trauma Center. \nTami Raviv\, a leader in Israel’s business community\, lost her 27 year-old daughter\, Niv\, and her future son-in-law\, Nirel\, in the slaughter at Kfar Aza. She was introduced to Dr. Kfir Feffer\, a leading psychiatrist in Haifa after mentioning to a mutual friend her desire to do something for those in trauma – a tribute to Niv and Nirel\, both of whom were pursuing careers in helping others in need. Kfir’s reserve service in the IDF found him working with Golani infantry soldiers suffering from combat related PTSD\, post October 7\, and understood that the skyrocketing needs to help address them. \nThe Niv Nirel Center\, now a reality\, is known as a pioneering\, world-class trauma and rehabilitation facility\, dedicated to providing state-of-the-art treatment to victims of combat-related trauma. \nFor more information\, please contact Sue Rosenbaum.

SUMMARY:Pathways to Hope: A Conversation with Young Israeli Changemakers
DESCRIPTION:Join Hartman’s Ronit Heyd\, Vice President and Director of the Center for Israeli & Jewish Identity\, in conversation with participants from the Shalom Hartman Institute’s Hazon program visiting from Israel Israel — Noi Schwartz\, Ayala Dahlan and Yonathan Machlis. \nSince October 7\, it has been hard to imagine a secure and peaceful future for Israel. Conversations across the Jewish world have often been marked by despair: ongoing war\, political deadlock\, internal divisions\, and a growing sense that the vision of a democratic\, united Israel feels more distant than ever. \nYet there is another story—one grounded in hope. Hope is more than a feeling; it is the engine of social change and the foundation of a better future. As Israel’s anthem\, Hatikvah\, reminds us\, hope is central to Jewish identity and to those shaping Israel’s tomorrow: young changemakers building community\, students defending democratic values\, spiritual leaders offering guidance\, and bold thinkers imagining new paths for shared society. They remind us that even in difficult times\, aspiring and working towards a better vision for tomorrow can bring about real change. \nTemple Emanuel and the Shalom Hartman Institute invite you to join us at Pathways to Hope (Netivim Shel Tikva) where you’ll hear from the leaders who are meeting today’s realities with vision and courage. Together\, with purpose and optimism\, we can help shape a better future for Israel. Register here. \nHazon (Hebrew for vision) is a cutting-edge leadership training initiative for Israeli university students eager to become agents of change.
