DESCRIPTION:Temple Emanuel in the Berkshires at Tanglewood is back! This year we will see Joshua Bell performs Bruch Scottish Fantasy on August 2nd at 2:30pm. Due to weather concerns\, all tickets will be in the Tanglewood Shed\, so all concert goers are safely covered for the afternoon. \nThis year\, we were able to coodinate having tickets in the first 8 rows of The Shed! Lunch will be from 12:00-2:00pm at a reserved white tent\, to the right of The Shed. Food will be available to purchase\, or you are welcome to bring your own to share with friends during this special TE in the Berkshires gathering. All tickets will be at “will call” waiting for you at the main gate. SUMMARY:The Life and Times of Elvis Presley
DESCRIPTION:Who would have imagined that forty years after Elvis’s death\, in a 20\,000 square-foot warehouse\, Angie Marchese\, Vice President of Archives and Exhibits at Graceland\, would unbox a large crate containing broken pieces of Elvis’s mother’s headstone that Elvis himself designed with the inscribed words “Sunshine of Our Home” and with a Star of David on the upper left and a cross on the upper right? \nThus began the public awareness that Elvis Presley\, indeed\, was a Jew through his maternal line. \nHis great-great grandmother\, Nancy (possibly Sarah) Burdine\, born in 1826 in Mississippi\, apparently immigrated circa American Revolution to America from what we now know as Lithuania. It was her daughter\, Martha\, who gave birth to Octavia (Doll)\, who eventually became Elvis’s grandmother (Gladys Love Presley’s iconic son). \nThrough the years\, Elvis made several strong connections with Jewish individuals\, became an avid reader of books on all religions and philosophies (he amassed thousands of books\, while building his personal library; many of these books are on Judaism and Jewish history)\, wore the Chai and the Star of David\, kept a Chanukah Menorah\, now displayed in the museum next to his birthplace home in East Tupelo\, and listened to/learned about cantorial music that we can hear come through in many of his songs\, and even became a “Shabbos Helper” as a young teen for a Rabbi and his family (before this family learned of his background). Found on the internet\, one can hear Elvis attempt to sing\, mostly hum\, to the tune Havah Nagila while he accompanies himself on the piano (Rehearsal for “Elvis Summer Festival 1970″). \nIt has been reported that during the most excruciatingly painful time of the passing of his mother\, Elvis took great comfort in the offerings of Jewish prayers\, etc. \nTo register\, please email LauraSue Steinman. \nAbout Judie Magidson \nJudie Magidson has extensive experience in education\, tutoring\, counseling\, and consulting\, working with students and families from preschool through college. She holds certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) and currently teaches ESL to older adults at the Brighton 2Life Community. \nShe developed and wrote the first-quarter curriculum for a course she taught at Northeastern University and is the author of an academic book published as part of her doctoral degree. Her writing credits also include a contributed chapter in a history textbook\, an unpublished children’s book\, and several poems\, some of which have been published. Judie holds two undergraduate degrees—one in Arts and one in Education\, with a minor in English—as well as a Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in Reading and a Doctorate in Education. \nFollowing more than three years of intensive research\, she authored a two-volume set on Elvis Presley. She has also presented her Elvis research to audiences in a variety of communities and organizations\, including Jewish Community Centers throughout Massachusetts\, New Hampshire\, and Rhode Island. \nMost recently\, she designed\, developed\, and taught a five-week course for OLLI students at the University of Massachusetts Boston titled The Life and Times of Elvis Presley\, based on her original research and writing.
