DESCRIPTION:Join us as we come together to remember the Holocaust as we ponder its meaning for us today. Together with our clergy and families of survivors\, we will observe this solemn evening through reflection\, prayer\, and music performed by our choir and members of our congregation. \nOur guest speaker will be Rachel Tesler\, daughter of our member Michael and director of the film\, The Last Holocaust Survivors: Never Again is Now\, of which a portion will be shown during the service. \nCongregants are invited to the Gann Chapel at 8:00pm for an extended viewing of the film and a Q&A session with Rachel. \nAbout The Speaker\nRachel Tesler is an award-winning writer and producer with 10+ years working in film and television. She has developed her craft as a multimedia storyteller producing the top news stories of the day and longform documentary series on topics ranging from crime to human interest. As an undergraduate at Boston University\, her screenplay Little Lost Puppy won the First Place Award in the Fleder-Rosenberg Screenwriting contest\, as part of the Redstone Film Festival. At Boston University\, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Bachelor of Science in Film and Television. Rachel has lived and worked in politics and media all over the world including Boston\, Washington\, D.C.\, Jerusalem\, London\, and New York City. In 2017\, she graduated from Columbia University with her Master of Arts in English Education. She published her first book UNBLOSSOMING\, a series of poetry in 2023. She started Tattletales Productions in 2024\, a boutique production house focused on documentary film and development. She lives in New York City.

SUMMARY:Material Witness Holocaust Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Through Nancy Marks’ art and poetry\, Material Witness confronts the chilling parallels between her mother’s hiding in France in the 1940s and the realities faced by immigrants today. The echoes between the 1940s and our contemporary world are undeniable and demand witness. This mixed-media installation\, which premiered in Boston in 2025\, features twenty-five drypoint prints and original poems. The images invite viewers to see them through a dual lens: ‘then’ and ‘now.’ What befell Jews\, Roma\, leftists\, and so many others targeted in that era resonates starkly with the experiences of immigrants navigating hostile systems and rhetoric today. Material Witness presents interwoven histories\, holding the pain of the past alongside the urgencies of the present. \nAbout Nancy Marks\nNancy Marks is a Boston-based artist and social justice advocate who uses her practice to address critical societal issues. She is the co-founder of The Opioid Project: Changing Perceptions Through Art and Storytelling\, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness and combating the stigma surrounding the opioid crisis. In 2024\, her work was recognized with a First-Place award from the National Organization for Arts in Health (NOAH) for Arts Advancing Social Justice. \nMarks’s current traveling exhibition\, Material Witness\, weaves together her mother’s experience as a Holocaust survivor with the contemporary struggles of immigrants. The project is also featured in the anthology America’s Slide Towards Authoritarianism (IHRAM Press). \nBeyond her advocacy work\, Marks explores the “aesthetic and social paradoxes” of the city through her Urban Abstraction series—an interest in the power of place rooted in her New York upbringing. Her Dialogue/Interpretation series further explores her connection to nature and the abstract emotional world\, reflecting an enduring respect for the human spirit’s capacity for profound healing.

SUMMARY:Bob Dylan's Jewish Roots with Instructor John Clark
DESCRIPTION:Bob Dylan is arguably the single-most important figure in American popular music in the second half of the 20th century\, a point made emphatically when he received the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. Though scholars had approached his work as serious poetry for decades\, few had considered the matter of how Dylan’s Jewish heritage and upbringing affected his creative output. With help from all the critical and analytical writing about Dylan’s Jewishness\, we will explore selected works of this enigmatic singer/songwriter through the lens of midrash\, of the prophetic tradition\, Yiddish humor and the past 100 years of Jewish-American songwriting. This presentation will include music and video clips and Dylan’s own words to tell the story. Featured songs: “When the Ship Comes In”\, “Forever Young”\, “Father of Night”\, “I Pity the Poor Immigrant”\, “One More Cup of Coffee”\, “Neighborhood Bully”\, and “Hava Nagila”. \nPlease Note: This program is for Temple Emanuel members only \nRegister→ \nAbout John Clark \nBorn and raised in Ohio\, John taught adult education for twenty years for Emory University and Mercer University in Atlanta\, creating classes on Fifties\, Sixties and American Roots music and a series called Lyrics as Literature. From 2008-2014 he was also a high school history and English teacher. Since moving to Boston in 2014\, he has taught adult and community education for five different programs\, including Brandeis\, Tufts and Cambridge. In 2025 he presented 380 American Music history lectures for senior living communities and Councils on Aging in the Boston area. John boasts a combined record and CD collection of over 8\,000 recordings.

She links modern antizionism to its historical roots of antisemitism from the Soviet Union. Dr. Lekht explains why antizionism is not “just politics” but the newest form of Jew hatred. Dr. Lekht a leading scholar\, educator\, and writer and has been heralded as one of the top 25 visionaries on today’s antizionism. \nPlease join Dr. Naya Lekht in dialogue with Rabbi Wes Gardenswartz for this timely discussion. \nRegister→ \nAbout Dr. Naya Lekht \nDr. Naya Lekht is a leading scholar of contemporary antisemitism. Born in the former Soviet Union\, she immigrated to the United States with her family in 1989. She holds a PhD in Russian Literature from UCLA\, where her dissertation focused on Holocaust literature in the Soviet Union. \nIn 2018\, Dr. Lekht served as a Scholar-in-Residence at Oxford University through the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP)\, where she is now a Research Fellow. In 2019\, she became Director of the Zionist youth movement Club Z\, where she developed curriculum on Zionism\, Jewish peoplehood\, and Jewish advocacy. She also hosts a podcast called “Don’t Know Much About” where she tackles antizionism and unpacks historical and political events to better understand today’s hot topics\, including many podcasts about today’s rise of antizionism. \nDr. Lekht is a published author who frequently contributes to The Times of Israel\, The Jerusalem Post\, JNS\, and serves as the Education Editor of The White Rose. She currently teaches courses on Zionism and the history of antisemitism and is working on her forthcoming book\, Zionism in the Diaspora: Reclaiming Israel Education.

DESCRIPTION:We know someone who is sick\, lonely or ageing. We want to visit them and help. But how often have we stopped in our tracks as the reality of the upcoming visit hits us? What are we going to do when we visit? What are we going to say? How should we behave? Is prayer part of the visit? What if the person doesn’t want a visitor or doesn’t want to talk? Will we be of help\, or will we be a bother? And so on. Bikkur Cholim – visiting the sick\, the lonely and the old – may seem hard. We know it is important\, a true mitzvah\, but we may not feel prepared for doing it. What does it take to rise up to the occasion? This 3-session course will help you learn the practicalities of bikkur cholim visits; identify ways in which spirituality and prayer can help us in our efforts to reach out to those whom we visit; and appreciate the special case of visiting our ageing elders. And importantly\, what we learn will help us not only be prepared to face the challenges of being there for others but also will help us prepare for our own future because one day we may well be that sick person or that ageing person who needs a visit. \nSession Schedule\n\n2/22 – Visiting the sick\, the lonely\, and the old\n3/1 – Spirituality\, prayer and religion in the visit\n3/8 – The special case of old age\n\nRegister→ \nAbout Rabbi Israel de la Piedra\nRabbi Israel has been working with the sick\, the old and the dying for the last fifteen years. He was the Rabbi and Spiritual Director at Miami Jewish Health (MJH)\, a large senior residential and rehabilitation facility in Miami\, during 2014-2021. He was awarded the “Clergy of the Year” award by the Ministering to the Elderly Conference in Miami in 2021 for his work at MJH. After his return to Boston in late 2021\, Rabbi Israel worked as a hospice chaplain at AccentCare Hospice and currently serves as the rabbi at Hebrew Senior Life’s Simon C. Fireman Community in Randolph\, MA. Rabbi Israel received his rabbinical ordination from Hebrew College in 2013. Prior to becoming a rabbi\, he had a long career as an economist with the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and in two African countries. Rabbi Israel and his wife Aliza are proud members of Temple Emanuel and keep homes in Kiriat Motzkin (near Haifa) in Israel and in Canton\, MA.

He was the Rabbi and Spiritual Director at Miami Jewish Health (MJH)\, a large senior residential and rehabilitation facility in Miami\, during 2014-2021. He was awarded the “Clergy of the Year” award by the Ministering to the Elderly Conference in Miami in 2021 for his work at MJH. After his return to Boston in late 2021\, Rabbi Israel worked as a hospice chaplain at AccentCare Hospice and currently serves as the rabbi at Hebrew Senior Life’s Simon C. Fireman Community in Randolph\, MA. Rabbi Israel received his rabbinical ordination from Hebrew College in 2013. Prior to becoming a rabbi\, he had a long career as an economist with the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and in two African countries. Rabbi Israel and his wife Aliza are proud members of Temple Emanuel and keep homes in Kiriat Motzkin (near Haifa) in Israel and in Canton\, MA.

Interrogating the Two Master Narratives about American Judaism \nAbout our Speaker\nRabbi Elan Babchuck serves as the Executive Vice President at Clal (National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership) and the Founding Executive Director of Glean Network\, which partners with Columbia Business School.  He has published in The Atlantic\, The Guardian\, Washington Post\, and Religion News Service\, writes a column for The Wisdom Daily\, contributed to Meaning Making – 8 Values That Drive America’s Newest Generations (2020\, St. Mary’s Press) and is the co-author of Picking Up the Pieces: Leadership After Empire (2023\, Fortress Press).
