Hartman Learning with Yossi Klein Halevi: Israel’s Identity Crisis: How Should Friends of Israel Respond?

February 27, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 9:15 pm

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE TO VIRTUAL EVENT. REGISTER TO RECEIVE ZOOM INFORMATION.

Our Temple Emanuel Hartman Learning Initiative continues, in partnership with CJP, with online teaching by Hartman’s Yossi Klein Halevi in conversation with Rabbi Marc Baker on current developments in Israel and the new government, especially the threat to democracy.

Yossi Klein Halevi, an American who made aliyah forty years ago, and has been interpreting Israel with love, passion, and wisdom for North American Jews, and who has taught many in our community as a senior faculty member of the Shalom Hartman Institute, will be with us virtually Monday night, February 27, at 8:00 pm, online.

Yossi’s topic: Israel’s Identity Crisis: How Should Friends of Israel Respond?  The timing for his session could not be more perfect.

Earlier this month Matti Friedman, Yossi Klein Halevi and Daniel Gordis wrote an Open Letter to North American Jewry expressing alarm:

This crisis is unique, and uniquely heartbreaking, because it comes from within. None of us is an alarmist. But this is a moment for alarm, and one in which the voices of Israel’s friends must be heard.

Israel’s government is moving to eviscerate the independence of our judiciary and remake the country’s democratic identity…

This is no “judicial reform,” but a dramatic alteration that would bring Israel’s governing system closer not to the US and Canada but to Hungary and Turkey.

We know that we want to be with Israel at this urgent time. But how?
Yossi will have so much to say to us Monday night at 8:00. This program is in partnership with CJP.
