One of the four new year’s listed in the Mishna (Tractate Rosh HaShana), the 15th of Shevat was the date selected for tithing on fruit bearing trees. In the 16th century, in order to celebrate the fruits of Israel, the Kabbalists of Sefat created a Tu Bishvat seder. Modeled after the Passover seder, it includes consuming specific foods and beverages, including 4 cups of wine, in a specified order with specific blessings. On Tu Bishvat in 1890, the custom of planting trees in honor of the date was established. In modern Israel it has become a day of environmental awareness. Enjoy this version of a Tu Bishvat seder.
