Sisterhood Presidents’ Message

Sisterhood Temple Emanuel is a caring, vibrant community with a multigenerational membership comprised of women engaged in synagogue life at many levels. As our mission statement notes, “Sisterhood Temple Emanuel strives to maintain and preserve Jewish heritage by connecting Jewish women of all ages to one another, the synagogue, and the Jewish way of life.  We work year-round to create and fund programs and events for the Temple Emanuel community while fostering awareness and activism for the Jewish community at-large.”

Sisterhood Temple Emanuel presidents, Elissa Fenster and Judy Bolton-Fasman, are long-time members of Temple Emanuel.  Elissa and her husband Bill have been temple members for 30 years, having joined when their oldest son Gabe, now a Modern Orthodox rabbi in New Orleans and the father of two preschool age children, was of Sunday school age.  Their middle child, Kayla lives in Boston with her husband and 18-month old daughter and younger son Isaac lives at the corner of Essex and Delancey Streets on the Lower East Side, where it all began for the newly- arrived Fenster family at the turn of the last century.

Elissa has served the temple in many capacities including, president of the Religious School’s PTO, as chair of the Camp and Israel Scholarship Committee, as vice-president for social action for Sisterhood and is currently Temple Emanuel’s liaison to the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, GBIO.

Judy and her husband Ken joined Temple Emanuel in 2001 at the insistence of their young daughter, Anna, who wanted to attend High Holiday services.  Anna is now a recent college graduate and her brother Adam is a college student.  Judy has served as an officer of the temple and was on the temple’s Board. She has also been on the Sisterhood’s Executive Board and was a vice-president of programming for Sisterhood.  Judy also edited the temple’s Shabbat pamphlet – “Shabbat At Temple Emanuel” copies of which can be found in the pews of the Rabbi Samuel Chiel Sanctuary.

Elissa and Judy are grateful for the opportunity to lead Sisterhood. With Sisterhood’s dedicated Executive Board and Board of Directors, they look forward to continuing the tradition of making Sisterhood a space where women gather to learn, to laugh and to support one another.

B’shalom,
Elissa Fenster and Judy Bolton-Fasman

Thank you to our Sisterhood Leadership for all that they do!
