JOURNEY TO POLAND: A German-Jewish physician explores Poland in 1924 with Susanne Klingenstein

February 7, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

A special message from Susanne:

In 1924, the German-Jewish writer and physician Alfred Döblin (later to achieve renown as the author of the novel Berlin Alexanderplatz) traveled through Poland where Jews had lived for 600 years. He was stunned by the sharp contrast between the emerging avant-garde lifestyle of urban Jews and the rural Jews‘ life of poverty (like their Polish neighbors) and close adherence to traditional ways. Döblin, who was just beginning to explore his Jewish identity and to consider Zionism as an option, was confounded.

In this course, we will read Döblin’s travelogue in six sessions:
January 24, 31; February 7, 28; March 7, 14
Time: 6-7:15pm.
All meetings on Zoom

6 sessions $150 for TE members, $175 non-members.
