Friday Evening: College Shabbat Alive!

November 24, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Dear Temple Emanuel College Students Coming Home for Thanksgiving:

We really want to see you. We know that it has been beyond horrific on college campuses since October 7. We want to hear you. We want to support you. We want you to know that we are with you. And to the extent that we can problem-solve together, we want to do that too.

So, on the Shabbat of Thanksgiving weekend, we wanted to offer you three moves:

1. I would love to meet with you Friday night, November 24, from 5:30 to 6:30 in the Gann Chapel, before Shabbat Alive. Would love to hear your stories. How has it felt to experience all this intensity? What have you learned about yourself, about your Jewish identity, about your feelings for Israel, about your school? How do you feel about going back after Thanksgiving?

2. Please come and stay for Shabbat Alive in the Rabbi Samuel Chiel Sanctuary from 5:30 to 6:30. Centering. Anchoring. Spiritual. Uplifting. If you are so inclined, feel free to wear your college swag! If not, that is fine too.

3. On Shabbat morning, November 25, Lishi Baker, an undergrad Jewish pro-Israel activist at Columbia University, is going to tell his story of Jewish and Israel activism on a campus that is hostile to Jews and to Israel. One hundred Columbia professors signed a letter supporting the many Columbia undergrads who refused to condemn Hamas for their murder, rape, and terrorism. How does one wake up in the morning in that sea of hostility? How does one wake up with whatever a positive attitude might be? How does one fight back legally, respectfully and effectively? After Lishi’s sermon, we will be around after services to unpack his words and to see what you might take away when you go back to school.

Please come to any or all of these moments. We can’t wait to see you again.
