Pomegranate Trees, Barbecue Physics and a Beer Goddess: Insights into Passover from the History of Jewish Food and Agriculture

April 8 @ 8:00 pm - 9:15 pm

Come explore the roots of Passover in the natural history of Israel and Egypt and the history of Jewish food and agriculture with Biblical and Talmudic ethnobotanist Dr. Jon Greenberg. We’ll learn about the physics and botany of the Paschal lamb, passages in Torah and Midrash that hint back to Creation for the meaning of Passover, and the culture war and theology of choosing wine over beer. If time permits, we’ll also discover an inspiring Zionist-environmentalist story that was uncovered by archaeology and analytical chemistry. This class will demonstrate some vivid examples of how science and Torah can enrich one another.
