Sisterhood Tuesday Morning Torah Study

April 9 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Event Series Event Series (See All)

Rabbi Gardenswartz will bring the best of Jerusalem and the Hartman Institute to our learners this fall, exploring:

When Jewish Values and How We Live Collide

What happens when there is a teaching that is core to Judaism, but we don’t like it?

We don’t live that way.

For example: obligation. It is a core of Jewish theology that God commanded us to follow the laws of the Torah, and that we are obligated to do so. But most of us chafe at the notion of obligation. We like to do what we want to do when we want to do it. We are living, in Arnold Eisen’s phrase, in the age of the sovereign self, when we get to decide how we want to live our lives. What happens to obligation in the age of the sovereign self?

There are many examples like it, all drawn (as is the case of obligation) from the curriculum of Hartman’s summer program in June, 2023.

For example: Sacrifice, Belief in God, Holiness, Creed, beliefs Jews are supposed to hold.

What happens when our texts say one thing, but how we live says another?

We will explore this creative tension together using the fabulous content that Hartman faculty taught us in Jerusalem.
